I just got my MSSIAH cartridge, and having waited for a year to use the MSSIAH's Mono Synthesizer I ran straight to my C64, plugged it in and turned it on.
Then I realised I didn't know what I was doing, turned it off, downloaded the Mono Synthesizer manual and read through it all. The bit that gets me, on page 7 of the manual, is 'when a knob is active you can tweak it with your joystick or game paddle'. Seeing as I don't have either, I'm a little disappointed that I'm not going to be able to use the Mono Synth until I can track down some paddles or a joystick on eBay.
Is there no other way to control the parameters of the Mono Synth?

Yes there is, if you're up for some DIY!
Here's a shameless plug of my own pot mod:

MIDI control change, anyone?

If someone could explain to me in simple steps how to set this up (I'm using a microKORG as a MIDI controller), that would be great... otherwise I have no hope.

It's fairly easy... do not get put off by MIDI, because it's your friend
sometimes it takes some getting used to, but the reward is guaranteed in the end..

1) you need a midi cable between MSSIAH and your Korg..
2) page 11 in the monosynth manual tells us how to setup MSSIAH midi reception (i guess it's ok by default)
3) page 8 in the monosynth manual tells you how to goto MIDI-mode (press 'C=' + 'crsr up')
Got it..?? now you should be able to play notes on the Korg that will trigger sounds from your C64. The screen blacks out, but that is the terms!
Now for controlling parameters...
1) The very last pages of the monosynth manual gives us a list of all parameters capable of receiving midi CC numbers
2) The Korg manual tells us how to assign the Korg knobs to CC values you found in the monosynth manual (i have no idea - not a Korg-fan)
Try an easy one to start with, Volume (CC#7) for example... assign CC#7 to a knob on your Korg and tweak it. if this is working for you've got the hang of it
If no cigar, then come back here and ask further... i loove talking midi, i loove helping fellow geeks, and last but no least, i loove C64!!!
