Possible to Damage Cartridge ?

HI there,

I was happily modding my SX 64 to do all the things I wanted to do with it.

Step 1 - add an audio out : I soldered a cable onto the pins on the video daughterboard connector. No problems.

Step 2 - add sync in : soldered some wires onto the userport connector daugther board : every thing ok.

Setp 3 - make a sync cable from TR-808 to the connector built in step 2. Check the 64 is getting strobe on user port with the port diagnostics in p-64 : everything OK.

Step 4 - reboot 64  and start 808 - problems !

Now the system gets as far as the p64 "press any key screen", but then goes back to the normal sx 64 boot messages (xxxx byes free etc).

Disconencted my mods, but doesnt go the menu in p64.

Is it possible to damage the cartridge or computer in such a way as to casue this ?

Edited to add some more info :

If I hold down the commodore key, I can normally get into the menu. If I reboot, some times its the same, sometimes I get dumped back to the normal boot screen, although with less available memory.

One I rebooted, and got the drummer to run, but I havent been able to repeat this.

>> When the cartridge arrived, its outer plastic shell was smashed, so im just using the unprotected circuit board. Everything worked fine yesterday, but after a bit of use today, im having the above probelems. Im not using any antistatic precautions when inserted and removing the p64 cart.

Obviously the thing to do would be to try it in another c4 would be a good start, but I dont have one to hand right now.

Any ideas ?

PS here are some pics of work so far ........ wink

Re: Possible to Damage Cartridge ?

Have you got a 2nd C64, of any nature, to test the cartridge in?

Re: Possible to Damage Cartridge ?

Hi there,

As i said, no I havent. I gave my spare away a couple of months ago. I'm wating for another one to arrive from ebay though !

I took apart some of the daughter boards and checked the connectors : everything seems clean and OK. I reassembled the daughter boards, and without apparently doing anything, the cartridge started working again, although now the mouse dosent work. The port test show it being active along all 4 axis simulatously.

Ive no idea whats going on now ! LOL. Im sure I'll get all working eventually !

Cheers,

A

Re: Possible to Damage Cartridge ?

My P64 cart don't work anymore in the C64c with switches for the cartridges fitted. Even after removing the switch the cart don't start. Other cart do start. And the cart do work in other C64... So trying it in a second C64 is definitely a must.

Even if I know you want to use your SX64 8(

Re: Possible to Damage Cartridge ?

Koney, it occurs to me that the cartridge pins are hardwired to an analogue shift register or something on the board. Is it possible that you damaged them whilst de-soldering the pins??

Re: Possible to Damage Cartridge ?

I don't know for shure, but I'd say it's possible...

As it hapenes to me, P64 has some stranger behaviours when modifing the board in the simplest way, even if other cart do work...

Re: Possible to Damage Cartridge ?

Found out the cause .... I must have had an intermitantly failing RAM chip.

It has now failed completely, and now the p64 Sequencer wont start properly, although I can still run drummer.

If anyone has any great ideas on how to find out which of the chips has failed, id be interested to know.

Presumably I cant just write a program to find a hole in the memory map, and relate that back to the individual chip ?

Cheers,

A
